## Why Aftercare Matters

Chemical peels accelerate cell turnover by removing damaged outer layers of skin. The fresh skin underneath is more sensitive and vulnerable. Proper aftercare determines how well your skin heals and how long your results last.

Neglecting aftercare can lead to hyperpigmentation, scarring, prolonged redness, or infection. Following a structured recovery plan protects your investment and maximizes benefits.

## Immediate Post-Peel Care (First 24-48 Hours)

### What to Expect

After your peel, you'll experience:

- \*\*Superficial peels:\*\* Slight redness, similar to mild sunburn
- \*\*Medium peels:\*\* Redness, tightness, possible mild swelling
- \*\*Deep peels:\*\* Significant redness, swelling, peeling for 7-14 days

### Day of Treatment

1\. \*\*Leave skin alone:\*\* Don't touch, wash, or apply products for at least 6 hours post-treatment (follow your esthetician's specific instructions)

2\. \*\*Stay cool:\*\* Avoid heat, exercise, and sweating

3\. \*\*Sleep elevated:\*\* Reduces swelling, especially for medium/deep peels

4\. \*\*Hydrate:\*\* Drink plenty of water to support skin healing from within

### First 48 Hours

- Cleanse gently with a mild, non-foaming cleanser
- Apply only products approved by your provider
- Avoid makeup, retinoids, acids, and active ingredients
- Keep skin hydrated with fragrance-free moisturizer
- Do not pick, pull, or scratch peeling skin

## The Peeling Phase (Days 2-7)

### Understanding the Peeling Process

Not all peels cause visible peeling. Superficial peels may only produce light flaking. Medium and deep peels create more obvious shedding. The peeling process is your skin regenerating—let it happen naturally.

### Managing Peeling Skin

Do:

- Apply moisturizer frequently (4-6 times daily)
- Use a gentle, hydrating serum under moisturizer
- Pat products on—don't rub
- Let skin shed on its own timeline

Don't:

- Peel, pick, or pull at flaking skin
- Use exfoliating products or tools
- Take hot showers or baths
- Exercise intensely until peeling subsides

### Sleeping During Recovery

- Use a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction
- Change pillowcase daily to prevent bacteria transfer
- Avoid sleeping face-down

## Sun Protection Protocol

### Why Sun Protection Is Critical

Your new skin has minimal melanin protection. UV exposure during recovery can cause:

- Permanent hyperpigmentation
- Uneven skin tone
- Faster aging of new skin
- Compromised results

### Sun Protection Guidelines

For 2-4 weeks post-peel:

- Apply SPF 30+ mineral sunscreen every 2 hours when outdoors
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat
- Avoid direct sun exposure, especially 10 AM - 4 PM
- Stay in shade when possible
- UV exposure through windows counts—protect yourself indoors near windows

Long-term:

- Daily SPF 30+ becomes non-negotiable to maintain results
- Reapply throughout the day, even for incidental exposure

## Products to Avoid After a Chemical Peel

For 7-14 days post-treatment (longer for deeper peels):

### Avoid These Ingredients

- \*\*Retinoids:\*\* Tretinoin, retinol, adapalene
- \*\*AHAs/BHAs:\*\* Glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid
- \*\*Vitamin C:\*\* (high concentration serums)
- \*\*Benzoyl peroxide\*\*
- \*\*Physical exfoliants:\*\* Scrubs, brushes, washcloths
- \*\*Fragranced products:\*\* Lotions, cleansers, serums
- \*\*Alcohol-based toners\*\*

### Products to Use Instead

- Gentle, creamy cleanser
- Hyaluronic acid serum
- Ceramide-rich moisturizer
- Mineral sunscreen (zinc/titanium dioxide)
- Healing ointment for very dry areas (Aquaphor, CeraVe Healing Ointment)

## When to Reintroduce Active Ingredients

Your esthetician will provide specific timelines based on peel depth:

### Superficial Peels

- Wait 5-7 days before reintroducing actives
- Start with one product at a time
- Begin with vitamin C, then add retinol after another week

### Medium Peels

- Wait 10-14 days minimum
- Reintroduce actives gradually over 2-3 weeks
- Monitor for irritation—if redness increases, wait longer

### Deep Peels

- Wait 3-4 weeks before any active ingredients
- Follow your provider's specific protocol
- Multiple follow-up appointments may be required

## Warning Signs: When to Contact Your Provider

Seek professional guidance if you experience:

- \*\*Signs of infection:\*\* Oozing, yellow crusting, increased swelling after day 3
- \*\*Unusual pain:\*\* Severe discomfort beyond expected sensitivity
- \*\*Blistering:\*\* Large or painful blisters (small ones can be normal with deeper peels)
- \*\*Prolonged redness:\*\* Redness that worsens rather than improves after 7-10 days
- \*\*Dark patches:\*\* Darkening of treated areas (may indicate post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation)
- \*\*Fever:\*\* Temperature above 100°F

## Maximizing Your Results Long-Term

### Building a Post-Peel Routine

Once healed, establish a routine that maintains results:

1\. \*\*Morning:\*\* Gentle cleanser → Antioxidant serum (vitamin C) → Moisturizer → SPF 30+

2\. \*\*Evening:\*\* Gentle cleanser → Retinoid (start low, go slow) → Hydrating serum → Rich moisturizer

### Scheduling Maintenance Treatments

Depending on your goals:

- \*\*Superficial peels:\*\* Every 4-6 weeks for ongoing maintenance
- \*\*Medium peels:\*\* Every 3-6 months
- \*\*Deep peels:\*\* Once every 1-2 years, if needed

### Lifestyle Factors

Support skin healing through:

- \*\*Sleep:\*\* 7-9 hours for optimal cell regeneration
- \*\*Nutrition:\*\* Protein, vitamin C, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids
- \*\*Hydration:\*\* 8+ glasses of water daily
- \*\*Stress management:\*\* Chronic stress impairs healing

## Chemical Peel Recovery Timeline

\*\*Day 1:\*\* Redness, tightness, sensitivity

\*\*Days 2-3:\*\* Skin may feel dry; peeling begins for some

\*\*Days 3-5:\*\* Peak peeling phase; keep skin hydrated

\*\*Days 5-7:\*\* Peeling subsides; new skin emerges

\*\*Days 7-14:\*\* Sensitivity decreases; gradual return to normal products

\*\*Week 2-4:\*\* Full healing; sun protection remains critical
